Garry Sandhu to be summoned by Jalandhar Police

The Jalandhar commissionerate police will soon summon Punjabi singer/actor Garry Sandhu, a friend of Ramneet Uppal ‘Romy’ who was convicted of murderous assault on Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza, for allegedly helping the convict flee outside India after he jumped the parole. “After analysing all major leads in this case, we have decided to summon Sandhu who is said to be a close friend of Romy. We will issue summons in this connection by next week,” said deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Navin Singla talking to HT.

The DCP said if the police found the singer’s involvement in helping Romy flee outside the country, action would be initiated against him as per the law. The police claim that if Romy has flown out of India, he used a fake passport for this. “We held verification at all passport offices in the country but no details pertaining to Romy were found in the database,” said the DCP. When a fast track court in Jalandhar sentenced the accused on October 24 last year, the singer was seen consoling Romy. Sources said Romy’s family has also disappeared ever since he jumped the parole on in the pretext of his sister’s marriage.

Police investigations in this case have also found that Romy’s family sold their entire property in Jalandhar during his parole period. In Yannick death case, the police are facing serious allegations of shielding Romy, son of late superintendent of police (SP) Dharam Singh Uppal. The SP had died of cardiac arrest after the police arrested Romy in this case. “Our teams are investigating where Romy could have taken a hide. We will hopefully reach a conclusion after grilling the singer,” said the DCP. Sources said another accused in the case, Jaskaran Singh Kalsi. alias Jassa, who was declared a proclaimed offender, would be extradited from Australia next month.

Jassa had fled to Australia soon after the incident on study visa and was working as a driver there. He was arrested by the Australian police in May on the request of Indian government in the Yaannick assault case.
